September is National Fall Prevention Awareness Month—a perfect opportunity to take simple, effective steps that reduce fall risk and help seniors stay steady, safe, and independent.
Gentle movements like walking, yoga, or tai chi help strengthen the legs and core, improve balance, and boost confidence. Even practicing standing on one foot while holding a countertop for support can improve stability over time.
Fueling your body right is also key to preventing falls. A diet that includes calcium, vitamin D, and protein supports strong bones and muscles. Leafy greens, low-fat dairy, salmon, eggs, lean meats, and beans are all great choices. Staying hydrated is just as important. Dehydration can cause dizziness and fatigue, making falls more likely.
Making your home a safe zone can dramatically reduce hazards. Most falls happen at home due to things like loose rugs, dim lighting, or cluttered walkways. Clearing floor space, installing motion-sensored nightlights, adding grab bars in the bathroom, clearing clutter and securing cords are small changes that make a big difference.
Being aware of your risks helps you take control of your safety. Medications, vision or hearing problems, and improper footwear can all contribute to falls. Regular checkups, wearing supportive shoes, and using mobility aids correctly are important steps in staying safe.
This fall, take the first step toward fall prevention. Whether it’s joining a balance class, removing a trip hazard from your home, or reviewing your medications with a healthcare provider, every action makes a difference.
Stay strong, stay safe and help raise awareness by sharing these tips with others in your community.

EASY CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP
Ingredients
2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
1 tbsp olive or avocado oil
1 small white onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp chili powder
32 oz low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup chunky salsa (your favorite brand)
1 cup frozen corn (or 1 (15 oz) can, drained)
1 (15.5 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Sauté aromatics: Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened and fragrant (about 3-5 minutes). Then stir in the minced garlic, cumin, and chili powder and cook for another minute.
Combine ingredients: Pour in the chicken broth, salsa, and corn. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
Add chicken and beans: Stir in the shredded rotisserie chicken and the drained and rinsed black beans. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, uncovered, allowing the flavors to meld.
Season and Serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into bowls.
Optional toppings
Tortilla chips or strips
Shredded cheese
Sliced avocado
Fresh cilantro
Lime wedges for squeezing
Hot sauce
This all comes together in around 30 minutes from start to finish. Feel free to add any toppings that you like and enjoy!
