Aging Well in June

June is National Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time dedicated not only to increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s disease but also to recognizing the unwavering dedication of those who care for loved ones living with it.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is a journey filled with compassion, patience, and resilience. As the disease progresses, caregivers often take on the roles of advocate, nurse, companion, and decision-maker—often without formal training or adequate support.

This month, we honor the millions of caregivers across the country who face these challenges every day with strength and love. We want you to know you are not alone, and Aging Well is here for you.

The Caregiver’s Challenge

Alzheimer’s doesn’t just affect memory—it changes the way people think, communicate, and interact. For caregivers, this means adapting constantly, sometimes grieving the gradual loss of the person they once knew, all while managing daily responsibilities. Many caregivers report high levels of stress, depression, and burnout.

Despite these hardships, caregivers continue to show extraordinary commitment. Whether it's helping with daily routines, managing medications, or offering emotional comfort, their role is crucial not only to the quality of life of those with Alzheimer's but also to their dignity and safety.

Ways to Support Alzheimer’s Caregivers

During this awareness month, consider how you can support caregivers in your community:

  • Listen and validate their experiences. Sometimes, just being heard can make a world of difference.

  • Offer practical help. Prepare a meal, run errands, or sit with their loved one to give them a break.

  • Encourage self-care. Remind caregivers that taking care of themselves is essential, not selfish. Asking for help is a sign of strength and courage not weakness.

  • Promote education and resources. Encourage them to connect with local Alzheimer's associations or support groups.

  • Advocate for policies and programs that provide financial and emotional support for caregivers.

You’re Not Alone

To every caregiver: you are not invisible, and you are not alone. Your work matters. Your love matters. And this month, and every month, we recognize your invaluable contributions.
